Do You Find It Difficult to Feel or Understand Your Emotions?
Perhaps someone asks how you’re feeling, and you’re not sure how to answer.
You may know something doesn’t feel right but struggle to put your experience into words. Or you might only recognize what you were feeling long after a situation has passed.
For some people, emotions don’t feel confusing—they feel absent. You may describe yourself as emotionally numb, disconnected, or unable to access what you’re feeling at all.
For many adults, these patterns began much earlier in life. If it wasn’t safe to express emotions, or if emotions were dismissed, ignored, or never talked about growing up, you may never have had the opportunity to learn how to recognize and understand them.
Emotional awareness isn’t simply about learning the names of emotions. It’s about gently reconnecting with your emotional experience through both your mind and your body.
These are skills that can be learned at any stage of life.

You can’t regulate an emotion until you first learn to recognize it.
You May Benefit From Emotional Regulation Coaching If You…
Struggle to identify what you’re feeling
Find it difficult to express emotions
Find it difficult to communicate your emotional needs
Often answer “I don’t know” when asked about your emotions
Notice physical sensations but aren’t sure what emotions they represent
Feel emotionally numb or disconnected
Want to better understand the emotions of others
When You Feel Emotionally Numb

Some people don’t struggle with overwhelming emotions, but they struggle to feel emotions at all.
You may feel emotionally numb, disconnected, or unsure what you’re feeling, even when you know something has affected you.
For many adults, this developed as a protective response when it didn’t feel safe to express or experience emotions. Over time, the mind and body can learn to disconnect as a way of coping.
Through a gentle, body-aware approach, you’ll learn to reconnect with your emotional experience, build an emotional vocabulary, and begin recognizing what your emotions—and your body—may be communicating.
Understanding Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage your own emotions while also recognizing the emotions of others.
It begins with emotional awareness.
When you can identify what you’re feeling, understand where those emotions show up in your body, and put words to your experience, it becomes easier to respond with greater awareness and intention.

Emotional intelligence is built on five core skills:
Self-awareness
Noticing what you are feeling and why
Self-regulation
Responding to emotions in healthy ways
Motivation
Staying connected to values and goals during challenges
Empathy
Understanding the emotional experience of others
Social skills
Communicating and relating more effectively
These skills influence many areas of life. Including relationships, parenting, work, and communication.
Like any skill, they can be strengthened over time.
